Environment and Sustainability
At Towngate Fisheries we do everything we can to minimise our impact on the environment whilst serving delicious sustainable fish and chips.
Sustainability, Traceability and provenance
Our Haddock is fully sustainably sourced and only comes from a few select Icelandic Freezer Trawlers which subscribe to the Icelandic Responsible Fisheries program. Every day we display in the shop the name of the trawler that caught that day's haddock and the area of the ocean in which it was caught.
But we don’t stop there! Our chips are produced off site by PG Chips. This reduces the amount of water needed to prepare the chips, as they can recycle their waste water and extract the starch from it, and the peelings are used for fertiliser rather than going down the drain.
We use local products where possible: we only use British potatoes, usually from Lincolnshire or Cambridgeshire and their origins are displayed in the shop. Our mushy peas are made from British grown marrowfat peas and our own-recipe batter is usually made with UK grown flour.
Packaging
We serve our fish and chips in Bio Boxes, made from Bagasse, a by-product of sugar cane. We use paper carrier bags rather than plastic bags and paper bags for our teacakes. Our cartons for peas and curry sauce are paper and the lids can go in the recycling bin. We have replaced sauce sachets with dip pots that can be washed out and reused or recycled. We only use wooden forks.
Recycling and energy efficiency
All our food waste is recycled, as is our cardboard and any waste oil we have to dispose of.
Our frying range uses the latest high efficiency technology to minimise gas usage and is up to 94% efficient (compared to an old frying rage that is only 50% efficient in terms of gas consumption). We have also fitted low energy LED lighting to reduce our energy consumption.
