All hot take-away food should be zero-rated for VAT

30 March 2012

Following the recent budget, there has been lots in the news this week about the new ‘pasty tax’. But did you know that you’ve been paying VAT on the fish and chips you buy for over 20 years?

Did you know that:

  • supermarkets have been selling hot chicken portions with no VAT added but fish and chip shops have been required to add VAT to their hot chicken sales?
  • a baker’s shop currently doesn’t charge VAT on hot pies but a fish and chip shop must add the 20% VAT for the same item?

We think that ALL hot take away food should be zero rated for VAT. Visit the National Federation of Fish Frier’s website for details of the campaign we’re supporting.
