Towngate Fisheries has won many awards over the years. We have also always held a top hygiene rating of 5, so you can always be assured of premium quality fish and chips with great service guaranteed!

National Food Hygiene Rating

Towngate Fisheries have always held a top rating of 5 out of 5 in the Food Standards Agency (FSA) food hygiene rating scheme. During inspections the food safety officer looks at:

• how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
• the condition of the structure of the building – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
• how we manage and record what it does to make sure food is safe

National Fish & Chip Awards ‘Employee of the Year’ 2024

Towngate Fisheries’ Manager Joanne reached the final four in the ‘Employee of the Year’ category in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2024. It was the first year the category was included in the Awards. We are so pleased that Joanne’s dedication to the job was acknowledged by the judges and we’re very proud of her achievement.

Telegraph & Argus Best Chippy 2024

Towngate Fisheries has been voted ‘Telegraph & Argus Best Chippy 2024’ by readers of the newspaper. Readers nominated their favourite chippy online to find the Top 10, then voting forms were published in the newspaper each day for two weeks. We are very grateful to all our customers who nominated us and voted for us.

TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence/Travellers' Choice Award

Towngate Fisheries was awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. In 2021 and 2022 we were awarded it's replacement, the Travellers' Choice Award. Fry Magazine 50 Best UK Fish & Chip Shops

In 2022, for the seventh consecutive year, Towngate Fisheries, Idle has been named as one of the UK’s 50 Best Fish & Chip Shops by Fry Magazine, one of the leading trade magazine for our industry. After 7 consecutive years we decided to no longer enter this award.

NFFF Fish and Chip Quality Award

Towngate Fisheries held the NFFF Fish and Chip Quality Award 2005 until 2020 when the scheme ended. We were the only shop in West Yorkshire to have held it for so long.

Seafish National Fish & Chip Awards

Towngate Fisheries has been a regular finalist and winner at the Seafish National Fish & Chip Awards in various categories. These include:

NFFF Quality Award ‘Champion Award’ Winner 2018

This award recognises shops that have attained and exceeded the rigorous industry quality standards and have done the most to promote these standards to customers and other fish and chip businesses.

From Field To Frier Award Finalist 2017 and 2018

This award celebrates businesses that promote responsible ingredient sourcing and sustainability practices

Healthy Eating Fish & Chips Award Winner 2015 and 2017

This award is for innovation and menu development promoting healthier options to customers.

Outstanding Achievement Award

In January 2018 Towngate Fisheries owner Mark Drummond was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Seafish National Fish and Chip Awards. This award recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to the fish and chip industry and has been instrumental in advancing the industry.
